Build Your Own Pizza with Tradition and Style in Ohio

There’s been a big trend in restaurants to jump on the customizability bandwagon for their menu items, so much so, “chipotle-style” has become a catchphrase.

We order coffee, burritos, burgers, and even barbecue this way. It’s so common, we’ve almost forgotten what the original customizable food has always been:

BUILD YOUR OWN PIZZA

What these restaurants have done is what Plaza Pizza® and other pizza restaurants have done for decades.

Building your own pizza is nothing new, so pizza restaurants have had to stand apart from the competition in other ways.

Build Your Own Pizza: Starting with the Freshest Ingredients

No one wants to make a pizza with ingredients and toppings that have been in the fridge for over a week. That way lies lackluster flavor and maybe a stomach ache.

At Plaza Pizza®, our ingredients are fresh, and it starts with our crusts. We open our doors at 6 a.m. to begin making the dough each and every day. Our thin crust pizzas, with the satisfying cracker crunch have been a signature of Plaza Pizza® since we opened our doors in 1971, and we’re not about to change that.

Next, we have our pizza sauce, made from a proprietary recipe that was painstakingly perfected at the beginning when Plaza Pizza® first opened. The sauce is also made daily, and quality of ingredients is one of the standards that makes our pizza sauce stand above the competition.

Finally, we have our toppings. The best pizzas have the best ingredients, and we’ve been using top-quality ingredients for as long as our doors have been open. We offer pizza topping classics like pepperoni and sausage, but we’ve recently given our menu a makeover to keep up with the more adventurous of customizers.

Here’s a List of Our Ingredients, So Customers Can Build Their Own Pizza:

We can also liven up your pizza with the addition of Buffalo or BBQ sauces or ranch dressing. It’s build-your-own pizza creation at its best.

Build Your Own Pizza with Customizable Sizes or Crust

Diets are changing. People are looking for ways to enjoy their favorite foods but fit them into a healthier diet or way of eating. That’s part of the reason that Plaza Pizza® has expanded our offerings to include cauliflower crust.

All of our delectable toppings are available on the 10” cauliflower crust, which nutritionally comes in at just 140 calories and 20 grams of carbohydrates.

As a side note, our cauliflower crust is touted as a gluten-free choice, However, it is prepared in a kitchen where other build-your-own pizzas are made that are not gluten-free. Pizza lovers who are especially sensitive to gluten should bear that in mind when placing an order.

The best part of choosing your own ingredients and toppings is that you can make your pizza as healthy (or as decadent) as you’d like it to be!

Plaza Pizza® also offers great versatility in build your own pizza sizes. We have a 9” mini, the 10” cauliflower crust, an 11” small, a 13” large, and a 15” xtra large for groups, families, and those who want the biggest bang for their pizza buck.

Whether you’re building your own pizza for one or building several pizzas for many, we’ve got your order covered!

At Plaza Pizza®, we don’t only customize build your own pizzas. We can do garden and Italian salads, and hot toasted torpedo sandwiches. Our garlic and garlic cheese bread, and the Shirley Lou dessert pizzas make great additions to custom pizza orders, as well.

The Best State for Pizza: Ohio

People very much associate the best pizzas with cities like New York or Chicago, but what about the best state for pizza?

In a survey conducted in 2022, ranking the top 50 cities for pizza, Cleveland, Ohio secured the #2 spot, and Columbus, Ohio nabbed the #3 spot. Following not to far down the list, Cincinnati, Ohio popped in at #19.

As the only state to score 3 cities in the top 20, Ohio became the obvious winner for the Best State for Pizza.

Nearly every one of the survey’s top 15 pizza cities is located east of the Mississippi River and north of the Mason-Dixon line, which is developing a reputation among pizza aficionados as the “Crust Belt.”

The Buckeye State sits proudly in the middle of some of the loftiest pizza competition in the nation, and Plaza Pizza® is routinely voted as a fan favorite in Newark and Heath.

Whether it’s a Friday night dinner or a weekend party, pizza is everyone’s go-to comfort food. But before placing that order, one practical question often comes up: How many slices are in a 14-inch pizza—and is it enough for everyone? This complete breakdown explains how big a 14-inch pizza really is, how many people it can feed, its calorie range, and how it compares to other sizes so you can order confidently every time. Picture this: you open the pizza box and see that glorious 14-inch pie. It looks big—but is it “enough”? The short answer: usually yes . The long answer involves a little geometry, appetite math, and some insider pizzeria knowledge. Let’s dig in. Understanding the Size A 14-inch pizza refers to the diameter of the pizza—measured straight across the middle. That gives it a 7-inch radius, and using the area formula for a circle (πr²), you get: Area = 3.14 × 7² ≈ 154 square inches of pizza. To visualize it: A 12-inch pizza offers about 113 sq in of surface area. The 14-inch version has about 36% more pizza. A 16-inch pizza jumps to roughly 201 sq in—around 30% more than a 14. So when you ask, “How big is a 14-inch pizza?” —think of it as a true “large” in most U.S. restaurants. It’s significantly bigger than a medium, and large enough for a family or small group.
