How Many Pizzas Do You Need for 20 People?

By Brian Claggett, co-owner Updated October 2026 For 20 people, plan on about 8 large pizzas. That assumes 3 slices per adult and 8 slices per large pizza, which is the usual rule of thumb for a group meal.

What's the formula for a group pizza order?

Multiply your head count by the slices each person will eat, then divide by the slices in one pizza. For 20 adults at 3 slices each, that's 60 slices. At 8 slices per large pizza, 60 divided by 8 is 7.5, so round up to 8. Rounding up is the safer call. A couple of leftover slices is easy to deal with. A guest who shows up late to an empty box is harder.

How many slices are in a large pizza?

A large pizza is usually cut into 8 slices. A small is often 6, and an extra-large can be 10 to 12. Those are typical counts, not a rule every pizzeria follows. Slice counts vary by pizzeria and cut. Thin, party-cut pizzas give more, smaller pieces, so call the Heath store if you're unsure.

How many pizzas do you need for 15 people?

About 6 large pizzas. Fifteen adults at 3 slices each comes to 45 slices, and 45 divided by 8 is just over 5.5. If the group is mostly young kids, 4 or 5 large pizzas usually covers it, since younger kids tend to eat 1 or 2 slices each.

How many pizzas do you need for 30 people?

Plan on 11 or 12 large pizzas. Thirty adults at 3 slices each is 90 slices, which works out to about 11.25 large pizzas. Go with 12 if the crowd is hungry or the get-together runs through dinner. Go with 11 if you're also putting out sides or snacks.

How do you choose toppings for a big group?

Order one plain cheese pizza for every three or four pizzas, because someone always wants plain cheese. Split the rest between a meat pizza, a veggie pizza and one or two favorites like buffalo chicken or BBQ chicken. If some guests want something other than the regular crust, the Plaza Pizza menu also has cauliflower crust pizzas.

Do sides change how many pizzas you need?

Yes. If you add garlic bread, cheese bread, mozzarella sticks, toasted ravioli or salads, you can usually plan on about 2.5 slices per person instead of 3. For 20 people, that brings the order from 8 large pizzas down to 6 or 7. Sides also help when the group includes picky eaters.

How should you place a large pizza order?

Order ahead rather than at the last minute, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. The Plaza Pizza online menu has a group order option, and you can choose pickup or delivery from the Heath store at 830 S 30th St. If you have questions about timing for a big order, call the store before you place it.
